A Different Kind of Upcycle: Older Cars

On my way to Goodwill the other day, my mother and I happed upon a hot rod/ low rider car show and decided to check it out.  This was so much fun to see!  I had never thought of revamping old hot rods into fancy show cars as a form of recycling, but in being more thrifty these days, this is a type of “upcycle” I fully support!

The work put into the cars was clearly very intense, and the result was beautiful and outright outrageous.  Instead of these cars going to a junkyard, they are repurposed and upcycled, maintaining the lifecycle of the automobile.  Not only is this a great way to keep the life of cars longer, but it’s also a hobby that many find fun and visually pleasing.

I had never experienced a car show quite like this, and the people were so pleasant and excited to talk about their “babies”, telling us all about the rework they did to the cars, showing pictures of rust buckets now transformed into an incredibly fancy car for everyone to enjoy.  Be it beautiful, garish or absurd, it is a sight to see, and one that people can brag about.

Not only did they have autos that are upcycled, but they also even had bicycles that were once ready to be thrown out that were transformed into the most fancy eloquent (and yes over-the-top) bicycles I’ve ever seen.  I didn’t even know these contests existed, but I am happy to see that many people, instead of throwing out these precious metals, are actually turning them into something new, different, beautiful and recycled.

The work that was done on these vehicles was mostly by hand, which is of course what these upcyclers enjoy doing.  That is their passion.  Doing the work  themselves is thrifty, saving money and keeping the lifespan of vehicles for years to come.

The age range of the cars were from mostly 50’s through the 80’s. Kudos to these people who find passion in recycling! Enjoy the pictures.
